As we stumble thru July, dear Momma Nature doesn’t know whether to bake us out or freeze us out…but we all know who is large and in charge!
Hi, this is Cliff Fowler with Cantrell’s Fishing Guide Service at Pine Knot Landing with your most recent copy of Fowlers Fish Tales.
After the “big” Holiday and the night sky going Kaboom, the day after the Pyro show, every seft respecting Rainbow DID hide under the nearest rock. Thank goodness they got over it and by the 6th started to hit in decent numbers again. Now, we’re in typical summer fickle where it’s either HOT or it’s NOT and every day can be a different story. One trip will catch 9 fish and the next one only 2. But that’s why we call it fishin’…we never did call it catching!
Current skinny on that blue jewel shows thermoclines bouncing around a bit in the West end and I’m not going to pay any attention to them as the Oxyclines (which are far more important) are consistant and as in-tune anglers know… these are levels not to penetrate. They exist 26 feet down at the Boom Line, 30 feet off Papoose Bay up to 23 feet deep off the West Public Ramp. They don’t exist in the Eastern ½ of the lake, but there’s no trout there anyway! Clarity has diminished a bit but 7 ½ feet of light penetration is still great for this time of the year.
With the fluctuating light conditions, namely going from a lot of cloud cover to clear skies, Now, it’s more important than ever to “match the hatch” basically using brights when it’s light and darks when it’s dull in order to mimic nature. Thusly, be prepared to throw the whole tackle box at em in order to have a bent stick!
Bucket mouths are post spawn and spinner baits and buzz baits work well in heavier vegetation, but don’t forget a “garden hackle” is natures perfect creation.
Whisker fish are doing well in this war agua for you insomniac anglers. They’re having a mac-attack, but will also inhale chicken liver, anchovies, shrimp or a bag of stink. The clear sandy bottom just outside the structure line is the best way to score a “kitty”.
It’s all about the grin factor and we’re smilin’ ear to ear here a mile and a quarter closer to heaven. So pull up a rock and let’s go BENDO!
